El Nino May Bring Civil Unrest This Winter
OCT 22, 2015 09:50 AM ET // BY EMILY SOHN
When an unusually powerful El Niño struck in 1997, civil conflicts erupted across the tropics, from Sudan to Peru -- as floods, droughts and fires devastated crops, fisheries and livelihoods.
It wasn’t an isolated case, suggests growing evidence that links El Niño’s extreme weather with a spike in violent conflicts in tropical regions. As one of the strongest El Niño events in recorded history gains steam this fall, some experts are warning of the potential for more unrest to come – and the urgent need to take preventive action.
“Half the world’s population is exposed to a higher risk of violence this year,” says Solomon Hsiang, professor of public policy at Berkeley. “Now that we know what to expect, we shouldn’t necessarily sit back and watch sparks fly. There are a lot of things we can do.”
Civilizations That Withered in Drought
Collapses of entire civilizations have been linked to climate shifts, with examples that go back centuries. The Little Ice Age in the mid-1600s, for example, has been blamed for widespread wars and political crises that occurred around much of the world at the time.
More recently, scientists have focused on the devastating potential of El Niño, a phenomenon that happens every few years, when surface waters in the Pacific become warmer than normal. That extra heat rises, altering atmospheric circulation patterns and affecting weather conditions around the world.
El Niño events play out in various ways from region to region, often but not always bringing rain to the American West and mild conditions to the upper Midwest. But El Niño hits hardest and most predictably in the tropics, with rising temperatures and rainfall extremes that go both ways.
Already, this year’s El Niño has sparked forest fires in Indonesia, drought in Ethiopia and a wimpy monsoon season in India, says Marc Cane, a climate scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University in New York, who created the first predictive model for El Niño.
Flooding is expected in Uruguay, southern Brazil and northern Argentina, while parched conditions are likely in most of Southeast Asia, Africa, the South Pacific and much of South and Central America.
Those weather extremes can be economically disastrous in the tropical world, where crops often fail when it’s too hot, dry or wet. Farmers struggle to make a living. Food prices go up. And people who already spend a large portion of their income on food end up facing financial stress. Conflict, according to accumulating evidence, often follows.

This article discusses the lack of rain that is expected for this year. This article says that the lack of rain can lead to political unrest, and conflict. This author does not seem to have a big bias if any. There is no side to take for the subject of this article. This concept of no rain bringing unrest makes sense. If there is no rain, crops can die, people can starve, and products can be limited. This things put a strain on the government and economy. When the government is strained the people react in negative ways, causing conflict and unrest. If there is expected to be low rainfall this year that will mean a lot of countries that will struggle and we should be praying for that.

El Nino is a natural disaster that is the lack of rain is causing all of this violence year by year, people need to react to this problem and assume the responsible way of dealing with it. All of the violence and instability caused by these phenom is a disaster in which we can not take a side, all we can say is that the civilization needs to help each other instead of fighting between them for it, although it causes a lot of bad things economically and socially, they need to work on a solution for it.

Our opinion towards your article is that indeed, the lack of rain can cause chaotic events such as droughts, terrible thirst and other horrid stuff too, but it isn't Mother Nature's fault about the after-math of this event, but ours because we tend to take everything for granted as if it will last perpetually. Global Warming is a very important issue now at days and people don't see at as important as it should be seen. Countries will struggle because of this (obviously) but they'll begin appreciating what they had and that resources as water shouldn't be taken for granted, because they're only temporary.

What we think of this blog is that is interesting, since we personally didnt know about El Niño and its effects, not only for the weather, but economical, social and violence way. We think that there should be taken extreme measures since it is something we cant control (weather) but our way to react to it we can control it. As said before, the government and the people should colaborate for the damages of El Niño, or situation related to El Niño can be solved faster.

This disaster, called EL Nino, has caused a lot of problems thank to the lack of rain in the last years. This lack of rain also affected the government and the economy in the place, and principally it affected causing a lot of violence in the citizens. It is important that every citizen help taking over this violence and conflicts that the lack of rain is causing.

This is causing problems to people because of the lack of water; this makes growing crops dificult for them. They also have to spend their money in a way that was not planned. People going through this situation need to have a positive way of dealing with it since they cant control natural disasters. All these damages also need to have an impact on the infrastructure of the countries and taking in consideration that the buildings and streets have to improve their way of construction to be able to support these kind of disasters in the future.

We believe that this article is targeted to people that are going to be affected by the Niño to inform them about the current situation. People should be prepared for this natural disaster so when it comes everyone can help each other. People should show their humanitary side and help each other so this problem doesn't affect as much and to prevent other conflicts such as civil unrest. The government should also take action to take care of their people and their country.

Although El niño is causing extreme catastrophes around the world and many people are suffering because of it, we can still come to a solution to the problem. Since it is not only causing environmental problems, but social as well including the economy and politics we believe that the best solution is to continue with the investigation mentioned and create awareness of the situation among people and what the consequence could be.
The lack of rainfall can be very harmful to everyone since rain is an extremely important natural function. Lack of rain is proceeded by lack of food and water and this affects the economy of a certain region. These consequences show us how natural functions make our daily lives easy and we should learn to be grateful for them. Also, we should try to do what we can to help the people who are affected by droughts, floods, fires, storms, and all of these disasters that prove that natural functions can also be negative.

We should be able to work as a whole and try to help the people in need. We do not know when or where is El Niño is going to hit every single year since it can change its course every time but working together and helping each other can really demonstrate that we do, in fact, care for each other. It can hit someday in America and some other time can hit in Africa and we help them someday and they can help us some other time to recover from such dangerous incidents. Together, we can not be brought down even though the floods and the wind are really strong because together we can work as a team and help each other out. Creating associations, sending food, clothing, goods for the recovery of the people that need them to recover from such incidents that can really change your whole life.

This is a serious problem who is affectin most people in those countries who are innocent people. This environmental problem does not affects only the city itself, but the economics on the country. That´s why we have to raise awareness on this issue and start helping this people in needs, because they lose everything, and they need our help to survive. This is a very important topic we should be alert and prevent catastrophic problems.

We think that this blog is the best one so far. We think it's really interesting how the lack of water/rain can affect so much this countries. This natural disaster not only affects the places it impacts, but it affects their crops as well and it's part of what they live of. This puts a strain on the government and the economy, making food prices go up and then leads to financial stress. The countries should help each other instead of fighting against one another, they have enough problems already... The government should also jump in and take action.

We believe that taking preventive measures for El Niño is crucial. As hurricane Patricia could have been devastating to Mexico, taking the necessary precautions left no casualties and wasn't as terrible as it was expected to be. El Niño will have negative repercussions on these countries economies, so being as cautious and well-prepared as possible will ensure the people's safeties.
It is very interesting to know how the phenomenon El Niño can cause such a devastation, not only on nature but with human behavior. It's amazing to know the relationship between climate and human violent behavior. Now that scientists know the possible outcomes of this phenomenon, they can find solutions and ways to prevent further conflict.

Very interesting article. We think that it is very dangerous for the world to be in such a drough, water is the most important aspect for life to exist and without it many things will die. We think that it is very important for people to be aware of what is happening and how we can try an prevent this. We agree with your comment and think that this a good article.

El niño is a worldwide disaster that affects many, and they should be prepared. With proper coordination, contingency should be made effective, and as long as generous countries keep helping the ones in need, casualties and disaster should be minimised or even deleted. We hope that the whole world unites in order to help decrease potential disasters. There are many ways for contributing to the cause, and it ranges from scientific discoveries, to donations and man-help. As a team, we hope for the best.
